5 Pulao Recipes For Kids

Preparing dishes for Fussy kids is always a big deal. Deciding on what to cook for your kid is not an easy thing to do, a new thing every other day!

While deciding on new cook menus for everyday is very bothering, you can try making the some dishes with some variations. And when we talk of variations, Pulao is that one dish which can be prepared in new way almost every day, quite a variation isn’t it?

It is not always necessary to make Pulao with rice, you can also try vermicelli and daliya to make Pulao.  Today I shall share with you all five yummy Pulao recipes for kids.

Green Peas Pulao Recipe

Green peas Pulao is quite an popular and the most basic Pulao recipe. Kids love peas Pulao and here you have its easy recipe.


  • 1 cup – Basmati rice
  • ¾ cup Onion chopped
  • 1-2 Green chilies chopped ( If your kid can have it)
  • 1 tsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 1 cup Green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • Fistful of Fresh mint leaves
  • Fistful of Coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste.

For the seasoning :

  • 1 ½ tbsp Oil or ghee
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1 Cardamom
  • 2 Inch piece Cinnamon


  1. Soak basmati rice for 20 minutes. Now cook the rice on one stove. Do not overcook, cook only till they are tender.
  2. Heat ghee in a pan and add the seasoning ingredients. Sauté these for a few seconds, then add  chopped onions, green chilies. Sauté onions till they turn golden brown.
  3. Now add ginger garlic paste and sauté for a minute or two. Add peas, chopped coriander leaves and mint leaves.
  4. Just when the peas are tender, add salt and give it a quick stir. Add pre cooked rice and mix everything very well and gently so that the rice do not break.
  5. Serve warm with raita or paneer gravy.

Daliya/ Broken Wheat Pulao

When I said variation I really meant it. Daliya is really very healthy but fussy kids refuse to eat it, but when you serve it in this recipe form, your kids will ask you to cook it every other day.


  • ¼ cup Daliya
  • 1 Spring onion chopped
  • 1 Green chili chopped ( Optional)
  • ¼ cup of green peas
  • ¼ cup carrot cubes
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • Salt to taste


  1. Clean and wash Daliya well. Half cook it in 2 cups of hot water for 5 minutes. Drain all the water and keep the half cooked Daliya aside. Half cook it until you find it reaching a blanched state.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add the onion and green chili and sauté.
  3. Now add peas, carrots, Daliya and salt and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Add 1 1/2 cups of water and pressure cook for 1 whistle.
  5. Garnish with the coriander and serve hot.

Soya & Vegetable Pulao

Soya is a rich source of Vitamins and protein. This makes it very clear how healthy is this recipe for kids.

  • 1/4 cup Soya Granules
  • 1/4 cup Rice (washed and drained)
  • Finely chopped Carrot
  • 1/4 cup Green Peas
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 small stick of Cinnamon
  • 1 Cardamom
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • 1/4 cup Chopped onions
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander-Cumin Seeds Powder
  • Salt to taste


  1. Cook soya granules in 3/4th cup of water on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes or till they are soft. Stir occasionally.
  2. Heat the ghee in a pressure cooker and splutter cumin seeds. Now add cinnamon, cardamom, asafoetida and onions and sauté on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  3. Now add carrots, peas, rice, cooked soya granules, turmeric powder, coriander-cumin seeds powder, salt and 1 cup of water, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  4. Serve with fresh curd or raita.

Vermicelli Pulao

This is another kids’ super favorite recipe. It is easy to make and kids drool over it.


  • 1/2 cup Vermicelli
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 tomato finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger grated
  • 1 carrot grated
  • 1/2 capsicum finely chopped
  • 8-10 French beans finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Cilantro for garnishing (Optional)


  1. Take a heavy bottom pan and pour in enough water and bring to boil. Add a little ghee and salt.
  2. Once the water begins to boil, add the vermicelli and let it boil until it is cooked.
  3. In the meanwhile take a pan and add some ghee. Once the ghee becomes hot add in mustard seeds.
  4. When the mustard seeds splutter add onions and sauté them till they turn light Brown.
  5. Add in tomatoes and cook for few more minutes. Check your vermicelli they must be cooked. Drain all the extra water and keep them aside.
  6. When the tomatoes turn mushy, add in French beans, capsicum and carrots, cover the pan with a lid and allow the veggies cook.
  7. Add all the masala to the cooked veggies and salt as per taste.
  8. After around two minutes, add the boiled vermicelli and mix everything nicely.
  9. Garnish with cilantro and serve.

Vegetable Pulao

This is another very popular and nutritious Pulao recipe. It is actually a cheat way to serve veggies to kids.

Vegetable Pulao


  • ½ cup Basmati Rice
  • 1 Big Onion finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic paste
  • ½ cup Mixed Vegetables
  • 3 cups water
  • ¼ tsp Roasted Jeera Powder
  • ¼ tsp Garam Masala Powder
  • Fistful Mint Leaves
  • Fistful Coriander Leaves for garnishing
  • 1 tsp + 1tsp Ghee
  • 10 Cashews
  • 1/4 inch piece Cinnamon
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1 Cardamom
  • ½ tsp Pepper Corns
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • ½ tbsp Oil
  • ½ tsp Jeera
  • Salt to taste


  1. Soak basmati rice for around 15mins. Cook rice along with bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom.
  2. Once the rice is cooked, strain the excess water and then spread it on a plate and fluff it up with a fork and allow it to cool down.
  3. Take all the veggies and steam cook them for 8-10mins or until the veggies are slightly soft. Set the veggies aside.
  4. In a nonstick pan – heat oil add jeera, let it splutter and then add ginger garlic paste, onion and fry for a minute then add roasted jeera powder & garam masala powder. Add salt to taste and sauté.
  5. In a small frying pan, fry the cashews in ghee till they turn golden brown and set aside.
  6. Add the veggies to onions and sauté for another 2 minutes.
  7. Now add the cooked rice. Mix it and cover with lid for around two minutes.
  8. Stir it and garnish with coriander and mint leaves. Now add ghee and fried cashews, mix.
  9. Serve
