Is it safe to feed kiwi to your baby? When can you give kiwi to your baby and in which form? What recipes can you try? Are these questions in your mind? If you are planning to give kiwi to your baby then you should know everything about it. These fruits are very nutritious. Kiwis are acidic in nature and so before you give it to your baby, you should think twice.

The Benefits for Your Baby:

Kiwi is known as Chinese gooseberries which were named as kiwifruits after the kiwi birds were found in New Zealand. Kiwi fruit is a rich source of vitamin A, C potassium, fibers, antioxidants and folates. Many acidic fruits can cause mouth rashes in babies and so it is important to think before feeding them to your kid.

Nutrients in a single Kiwi Fruit:

Vitamin A – 66 IU

Vitamin C – 70.5 mg

Vitamin B1 or Thiamine – 0.02 mg

Niacin – 0.26 mg

Folate – 19 mcg

Some other vitamins – Small amounts

Potassium – 237 mg

Phosphorous – 26 mg

Magnesium – 13 mg

Calcium – 26 mg

Sodium – 2 mg

Iron – 0.24 mg

Manganese, Copper, Zinc – small amounts

When is it Safe to Give Kiwi to Baby?

Check if your baby has food sensitivity. It can show in the form of diaper rashes, tummy troubles, etc. In such a case, wait few more months since it is not the right time to feed kiwi. Let the baby reach 10 to 12 months of age. If the kid doesn’t have any such sensitivity, then start giving in small quantities in small pieces. Dice the kiwi fruit and mash it well. Kiwi is acidic but not allergic and so you can give it a try.

Are the Kiwi Seeds Safe?

Kiwi seeds aren’t harmful. They are very tiny and safe to eat. You just need to make sure your kid can tolerate its texture. Also remember that its seeds will be swallowed by your baby and you can see them in the diaper but you no need to worry about it.

Selection and Storage:

Kiwi is not listed in the dirty dozen and so you need not prefer buying it organic. While buying these fruits, check the type of kiwi and its skin. The skin of this fruit shouldn’t be bruised and shouldn’t have visible indentations. Get the firm fruits since the softer ones may go bad soon in few days. Wrap them in a paper bag along with a banana or an apple to ripen in just a couple of days. These fruits stay up to 3 to 4 weeks in refrigerator and up to 1 week without it.

Recipe Ideas:

You can mix few fruits like apples, pears, peaches, avocados, blueberries and chicken with this fruit in the recipes.

Kiwi Puree: Clean and peel the kiwi fruit, and blend it well without any pieces left so that your baby can have it easily.

Kiwi Salad: You need 1 kiwi, ½ a banana and 1 pear for this.

Peel these fruits and dice them into pieces. Take them in a bag and add a coating of crushed cereal, wheat germ or anything else of your choice. Mix well and serve it in a bowl. This is for kids who have teeth and can eat.

Fruit puree: You need the same ingredients used for the salad. Blend the fruit pieces well in a food processor and your fruit puree is ready.

Fruit Smoothie: Use the above fruits with some yogurt to blend them well. Feed the smoothie to your baby.

Green Monster: You need 2 ripe kiwi fruits, 1 ripe avocado and ½ cup cubed mango.

Peel the mango and cut into cubes. Peel the kiwi fruit and slice it. Peel the avocado and pit it. Mix all the ingredients and blend them. Instead of blending them, you can also just mash them but remember this will be so messy.

So, once you are sure that your baby suffers with no food sensitivity, start giving kiwi fruit in small quantities and gradually increase it. These five recipes are quite easy to make and delicious at the same time. Let you baby get all the nutrients in this fruit.
