How To Care For Your Baby’s Umbilical Cord

Umbilical cord care is the foremost knowledge a new mother should have. This was where you were connected to your baby prior to birth. Once the mother delivers the baby, the baby’s umbilical cod will be clamped ad cut accordingly.

As a responsible mother you need to take proper care of the cord until it heals and dries completely.

Tips To  Care For Your Baby Umbilical Cord:-Some important suggestions I had received while I was still in my maternity hospital

  • When the cord is still clamped and yet to be healed, give the baby a quick sponge bath. Avoid the fully oil massaging and water sub merged bath in the bath tub.
  • Diapers, be it cloth diapers or ready diapers, they should not come in contact with the cord. The cord should always have space for breathing.
  • Keep the area at the base of the cord clean and free from damp. Gentle tap with cotton cloth or q-tip to remove any moisture.
  • Do not skip the prescribed ointment until it has been dried and healed.
  • Always watch for pus formation, or swelling, or redness, or foul smell. In any of the case, reach to your doctor without delay.
  • Pay attention to the belly button area even after the chord stump falls off. There could be discharges even after days of cord healing. Clean gently and maintain damp free. If the discharges do not stop, then consult your doctor.
  • Extensive care for belly button is a must for subsequent months later on.
