Must Have In Maternity Hospital Bag

I am in my ninth month of pregnancy and few days back one of my friends asked me if I have prepared my maternity hospital bag. When she mentioned this I was kind of confused because when you are pregnant whole world gives you advice. It’s not that their advises are bad or something, it’s just that they often contradict so much .

baby maternity bags

For example , one of my relatives advised me to mop the floor in last month so that I can have normal delivery, but later on another relative told me not to do that as our body is not used to of it. So I decided to choose the best (read easiest) of the two and skipped the idea of mopping πŸ˜‰

Similarly one of my friends advised me to not to prepare the maternity bag before fifteen days of the given due date because of some superstitious belief Β where as some suggested me to prepare it as soon as you reach 34th week

I asked my facebook friends on Wise She to let me know what all things they considered are must have in their maternity bags. Like always, helped poured in from all directions like crazy and I am thankful to every one who gave me each piece of advice. My bag is going to be packed soon and I am surely going to share it with you guys.

Till then those who are looking for info of what to have in their maternity hospital bag can check out below πŸ™‚

  • Unisex baby dress
  • One bedsheet
  • Three packs of undergarments
  • Baby body lotion, body wash, Baby oil
  • Got three soft baby towels and two for myself

  • My bathroom slippers.I have skipped scarf slippers, sweater, shawls etc.
  • Baby nursing cover( No body advised me this but I am carrying it :D)
  • Feeding bottle
  • Baby changing mat

This is all what I think I will be needing, moreover hospital is quite near to my place and there will be almost 20 people around me ready to do anything .You can imagine the enthusiasm which my friends and family are having currently and I guess Daddy and Mom will get to see the baby last :rotfl:

oh nice idea…Keep it sure many people will benefit from it….All the best to you. know from where to get blood of ure group incase its needed. U remember the story i told bout the c section baby one evening…what i saw was that 2 or three clean bedsheets were required to lay at the base of the baby crib as the ones the hospital had were not so hygenic.

  8. Pradnyaa says:

Hey Ana! Congrats for this new blog πŸ™‚
Do carry some good music ; if in case the wait is long, the music makes it bearable

    A lil statue/pic of a deity/Guru you believe in.
    helps in keeping calm.
I carry a little Buddha statue everywhere I go πŸ™‚

Your bag looks complete otherwise πŸ™‚
All the best Ana, and little darling :*)

  9. Congratulations Anamika…. May God bless u n ur hubby with a beautiful angel in ur arms soon πŸ™‚

    congrats anamika,
am a silent follower of wiseshe i think i commented a couple of times ,
happy to know about your good news
am due this month end too, this is my second pregnancy
june 27th is my due date when is urs?

    my list is almost same—

    apart from those

    –Camera, batteries, battery-charger
    — Additional bag (we may need it while vacating the room to dump all our things)
    — Cash – smaller denomination to be used in canteen.

    • Hey1 Yes a additional bag and camera with the battery is good suggestion..thanks for letting me know..i am due in july so i have a long wait ..You might not able to check also that time..lolz..we will enjoy our baby talks here then πŸ™‚

  11. Hey Anamika congrats ! I am a silent follower of your blog & felt very happy to see your post of baby announcement..I am also TTC and have thyroid problem, so i understand how it feels but I am happy for you. I dont know much about it yet but the only thing I think left that you may carry will be a good rash cream & burp cloth. as i have seen few of the newborn babies to develope a rash soon & burp cloth would help for keeping you mess free.
Hoping to see more posts on this blog.

    • Hi Nimisha..i can understand how one feels when they suffer from these problems..I wish you loads of luck and best wishes..i will carry the burp cloth for sure..

  12. Ana…my friend was advised wet wipes too…she was sort of feeling unclean after the delivery so you might want that to dab your face, even during your contractions maybe.

sorry for the advise…but some people advice sanitiser…my friend who’s studying MBBS says that sanitiser is chemical goop so u shudnt use it around babies!!

  13. I think u shud take cotton.. use it instead o wet wipes… dip cotton in warm water n wipe.. much softer than wipes i feel.. They’l get rashes easily…

    • do u think boiling water will be good thing in this hot summer.?

      • not boiled water ana… water from the geyser s gud enough… n yes no matter in any weather its recommended to use warm water only… i still clean my son with warm water even tho he’s 10month old.. they r more likely to fall sick…

  14. Nice to see all the preparations around.

Ur list is almost complete. I think u’ll need more undergarments and bedsheets.

sterilised cotton for cleaning baby’s bottom. Dip it hot water and use.

Of course camera for the first snap which will remain special forever. Infact I have the complete recording of my c-section and the babies taken out of my womb. My kids wonder at the video

    Have a safe delivery.

  15. WOW! this is really helpful post Ana! m bookmarking it for future πŸ˜€ may be 2 or 3 years down the line πŸ™‚

  16. Poornima says:

  17. ohhh!!! thanks for the tippppp….

  18. Wow..the list is great..I am soo excited for you. Also carry a hand sanitizer and a kettle and a flask

  19. better keep johnsons wet wipes.. its completely safe on newborns..can be used at every change.. better than using water.. water is harsh on newborn skin if used frequently.. stock up on baby washclothes..
that lipbalm tip is right.. ur lips will go dry like desert..
ask hubby or anybody else.. to keep camera charged..u will miss those awesome moments after birth.. πŸ™‚
yay…….. first time coming to babywiseshe.. i thought the blog did not start yet..
    Great idea Ana

  23. Hey Ana,

Since its now time to pack ur maternity bag, I wud like to mention sum things..
    1. 3-4 nursing gowns – very helpful in changing every now and then since u will be ooozing milk when its comes in
    2. lots and lots of small napkins – maybe 20-30 :D, believe me u need them, puking, soaking…anything. always wash baby clothes in water in which dettol has been added
    3. baby clothes, soap, powder, lots of sheets to wrap the baby
    4. bed cover and bed sheet for the baby
    5. if ur breast hardens when the milk comes in, start by pinching ur nipple and pour hot water on ur breast to ease the flow and relieve pain.
    6. breast pads to soak the excess
    7. learn the best technique of holding the baby for breastfeeding from the book – What to expect when u r expecting series – the first year. it will take the load off ur mind of all the unwanted tension regarding the baby. READ AND RE-READ.
    8. Rest Rest and more Rest

all the best and practice breathing techniques…..believe me, it is difficult to remember these things when the labor comes in and the pain knocks u out. take each contraction at a time.

  24. wow Ana… god bless u :* nd our chotu wiseshe πŸ™‚

  25. oooh anaaa….i can’t believe i saw this post only now. One thing I’d like to add to this list is a baby carry-bag. Family n friends may wanna carry ur darling but u don’t want germs spreading. With the bag, they won’t have direct contact with the baby. Also, even if the hospital provides a cradle u may wanna put your baby in a soft carry bag and then place him/her in the cradle. It’s the most useful thing ever!

  26. Please include breast pump in ur list. Or atleast, let your family member know where to buy the pump immediately, just incase u need.
New born babies drink hardly 10 ml of milk. But, there will be tons of milk in your breasts. This unused milk will harden in its duct and cause severe pain to the nipple. It might also lead to breast abscess.
Even after your baby has been fed, if you feel your breasts are still very heavy use breast pump to remove out the excess milk. Squeezing your breasts with hands to remove the milk is not a good idea. Pump is the best solution.
I am not scaring you. I am saying this out of my own experience. I have used electric pump from Pigeon.

    • you are right..can you tell me which one should i buy in this

      • The manual pumps do not work well. Electric ones are excellent. I bought the one that cost Rs 2500 (the one that includes feeding bottle set). Removes out all the excess milk into the feeding bottle.
This one needs an adapter to be plugged, or a pair of Duracell batteries. You will need a new pair of batteries for every 5 days.
I am sure the other electric pumps are also good.

I have suffered right from the third day after my delivery. My baby simply refused to suck. She would swallow only if fed in bottle. Only after about 15days of delivery I got these pumps. By then, my condition was worst and abscess had taken place.

  27. Revathy says:

cool list!!! all the very best! πŸ˜€

  28. Hey anamika u r pregnant!!!!! Hearty congrats yar. Guess what????? I am also in my 7th month πŸ™‚

  29. Ana,
The initial few days of breast feeding will prove to be very painful and sometimes nipples may become sore. So please keep a tube of Epigene cream. It contains aloe vera and is good for sore nipples. But please do remember to remove it before feeding your baby. If you are going to hve a C Section you might hve some headache after it. Please do carry some spare pillows.
Good Luck and all will be fine.
