What Causes Cough?

A cough is usually a sign your child’s body is trying to get rid of an irritant. Common causes of cough are:

  • Coughing is a classic sign of cold along with runny nose or sneezing
  • Any kind of infection in the body
  • Sometimes, it is due to Asthma which can be tough to diagnose since the symptoms vary from child to child.
  • Due to exposure to irritants like pollution from cigarettes or smoke
  • There are different kinds of cough such as the mucus-filled cough, the barking cough, the wheezy cough, the continuous cough, etc.

Massage With Essential Oil:

Essential oils help in clearing chest and nasal congestions. It is advised to ignore using Vicks Vaporub for toddlers . Instead, massage with essential oils mixed with organic olive oil. Avoid applying essential oils directly onto the skin.

Herbal Tea:

Prepare tea by adding tulsi leaves or small pieces of ginger. These natural ingredients are very powerful in soothing cough & sore throat.

Honey & Lemon:

Honey is known for its antibacterial properties & lemons are rich in Vitamin C & a powerful antioxidant. These help in soothing the baby’s throat & reduce coughing. You may also mix honey with lemon & warm water

Ajwain Kada:

This is a very effective recipe for babies over 6 months. Along with ajwain, include ingredients like turmeric, water, jaggery, tulsi leaves & ginger.

Checkout the recipe below

Eucalyptus Oil Soothing Vapor: Eucalyptus oil or Nilgiri Oil is extracted from the leaves of eucalyptus tree which helps in treating coughs, colds and other respiratory problems. You can either massage the baby by mixing eucalyptus oil with any carrier oil like olive oil or you may add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in warm bathing water and give your baby a bath.

Steam Or Warm Bath: Steam helps in clearing the nasal track. You may try steaming the room using a vaporizer or giving a warm shower. Make sure to protect the baby from direct steam.

Hydrate! Since a baby with cough and cold usually breathes faster than normal, it causes dehydration. Give your baby lots of liquids like warm water, juice, etc. to soothe her throat and prevent dehydration. You may also try boiled ajwain or cumin water.

Lots Of Rest:

A lot of the energy is lost from the body when fighting an infection. Make sure that your baby gets as much sleep as possible.

Avoid Dairy Products: Dairy products like cow’s milk are mucous producers. If you are breast feeding your baby, then continue with it.

  • Try using nasal drops after consulting the doctor.
  • Maintain personal hygiene to keep infections at bay. Keep yours as well as baby’s hands clean at all times with antibacterial wipes or soap. This will avoid further spreading of germs.
  • Keep baby’s head elevated during sleep in order to ease breathing
  • Feeding the baby with warm vegetable khichdi & vegetable soup also provides immunity to the body.
  • Milk with turmeric is effective for dry coughs.

A Word Of Caution!

Avoid giving your toddler cough or cold medicines. Do not give honey-based cough drops to children aged 1 or younger. Don’t give cough medicine to children under age 4. If at any point your child has a high fever, struggles to breathe, or develops a bluish hue around her mouth, get medical help right away. Also, avoid any home remedies which involves intake of any oil / herb/ medicines for babies below 6 months.
